killarney's publick house

A new generation will now enjoy its splendour and beauty and so begins a new chapter in the long and varied history of Killarney House and Gardens. After the fire that destroyed Killarney House, the Kenmare family relocated to a renovated stable block of the nearby ‘Kenmare House’. After the death of the last Earl of Kenmare in the 1950s, Kenmare House and its adjoining lands were sold to an American investor syndicate. Finally the property was purchased by Irish American property developer, John McShain and his wife Mary.

Yet few veered far from the cherry blossom -lined avenue to explore the environs of Killarney House. Killarney is sometimes referred to as ‘the town in the Park’, as it is surrounded by the National Park. This sleeping beauty was awakened from its slumber when it was re-opened to the public.

You can start your adventure in the National Park from the grounds of the house as you head off for Knockreer or Ross Castle. If you’re taking the dog for a stroll or heading out on a run, where better to go? Even if you’re just using the route through the gardens to get to the other side of town, it’s a wonderful detour. As youngsters, we often played in the adjoining fields – never for a moment contemplating the beauty and history that surrounded us. Those same meadows were often used for football and soccer matches and athletic meetings for local schools and clubs. With the McGillycuddy Reeks and Lough Leane on one side and Killarney House on the other, it made for a special arena – a field of dreams of a different kind.

Great bar food,

In 2014, the house and gardens were closed to the public to enable the extensive reconstruction works to be completed. Finally in 2016, Killarney House and Gardens was re-opened to the public. Following the opening of the Gardens, the house itself opened to the public in July 2017. Harking back to its former glories, the House and Gardens have been firmly re-established as a favourite with locals and visitors alike.

The relevant obscurity that befell the house and gardens was hard to comprehend given its proximity to Killarney town. In recent decades, the splendour of Killarney House & Gardens lay hidden behind high walls in one of the lesser visited parts of Killarney National Park. Although the grounds were always accessible, the house itself lay neglected and the surrounding gardens had long surrendered to the wild. The much loved Cherry Walk was a popular local pathway to the Knockreer area of the National Park.

Killarney House and Gardens is a treasure of the Killarney National Park that is located on the doorstep of Killarney town centre. The house and gardens offers a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the busy town. Its weaving pathways through carefully manicured gardens provide an oasis of calm.

Much more than that, Killarney House is an ideal starting point for a journey exploring the wonders of Killarney National Park. The ‘Golden Gates’ that stand guard at the main entrance form a portal to the wonders of the National Park beyond. As you pass through these (black!) gates, the sounds of the town fade away and the magic of the Park begins to wash over you with each step you take. Over the intervening years, the McShain family used Killarney House as a summer home, and in their latter years as their primary residence. The family arranged for the property to be sold to the Irish state with a proviso that they would retain usage of the house and gardens for the rest of their lives.

The McShains renamed the property ‘Killarney House’ and thus what we now know as ‘Killarney House’ came into being. The original ‘Killarney House’ was home to the Earls of Kenmare and was built in the early 18th century. Known locally as ‘The Mansion’ – (how imaginative…), this sprawling structure was considered one of the finest mansions in Ireland at the time. The house succumbed to fire in 1913 and all that remains today are the stepped gardens and some of the original gate lodges.

The gardens in the immediate vicinity of the House includes several seats, benches and nooks and crannies to sit and watch the world go by. The planted beds and tree lined pathways provide a circuit to wander the gardens. The newly-planted cherry blossoms trees flank an avenue that has been revered by walkers and strollers since the gates were first opened. The towering rows of trees that climb above the boundary walls muffle the sounds of the town on the other side. As dusk approaches, roosting birds take over these same trees to signal the close of day.

Entrance to the grounds of Killarney House are generally from 9am to 6pm although this is extended sometimes during the summer months. Guided tours of Killarney House take place every 30 minutes during the months of April to September. Killarney House is located just a few hundred metres from Killarney town centre. The entrance to Killarney House at the ‘Golden Gates’ is where Muckross Road, Countess Road and Kenmare Place meet at a small roundabout. The nearby Methodist Church is the closest landmark to the Golden Gates entrance.

The gardens, fields and meadows in the vicinity of Killarney House have always held a special allure for the people of Killarney. The looming house in the background was often taken for granted, especially during its unoccupied years. In the years that followed, Killarney House and Gardens fell into disrepair and neglect behind the high walls that encircled it.

Knockreer House now occupies the site of the original ‘Killarney House’ and continues to enjoy the marvellous elevated views of Lough Leane and the McGillycuddy Reeks. There is a second entrance from Mission Road beside the monument to Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty. Finally, you can access the House and Gardens via a gateway in the Knockreer area of Killarney National Park. All three entrances to the House and Gardens provide pedestrian access only and the gates are locked overnight.

house of saddam

On June 8, 2023, it was announced that new music was set to be released following or preceding the premiere of each episode in an EP format, abandoning the soundtrack format altogether. The Idol is an American drama television series created by Sam Levinson, Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye, and Reza Fahim. The series focuses on female pop idol Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) and her complex relationship with Tedros (Tesfaye), a sleazy nightclub owner, self-help guru, and cult leader. Appearing in supporting roles are Suzanna Son, Troye Sivan, Jane Adams, Jennie Ruby Jane, Rachel Sennott, Hari Nef, Moses Sumney, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Eli Roth, Ramsey, and Hank Azaria.

His patience finally ends when Uday hijacks a shipment of medical supplies intended for Hussein Kamel's brother, Saddam Kamel. The brothers discuss Hussein Kamel's plan to cooperate with Ekeus and the CIA, hoping that he will be installed as Iraq's new president after Saddam is overthrown. House of Saddam is a 2008 British docudrama television miniseries that charted the rise and fall of Saddam Hussein.

Reviews

After Saddam survives an assassination attempt in the Dawa stronghold of Dujail, Barzan fears for his own life and razes the city in retribution. Saddam exiles Barzan to Switzerland and marries Raghad to Hussein Kamel al-Majid, forming an alliance with the al-Majid clan. Hussein Kamel takes over Barzan's post and becomes the new leader of the Special Republican Guard, a security force charged with protecting Saddam and his rule.

Production country

This four-hour HBO miniseries reveals the private world of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein as he rose to power, executing anyone in his way. Despite years of war and sectarian conflict since the 2003 US invasion to overthrow Saddam Hussein, Iraq has returned to a semblance of normality. But civil liberties – for women, sexual minorities and other groups – remain constrained in the conservative society. They saw Saddam as their hope and their salvation, fighting the United States defiantly and courageously to force a just settlement of their cause. This caught the imagination of the masses throughout the Arab world, and their shouts of approval fed his swollen ego.

Iraqi and U.S. officials said the government would probably extend Friday’s curfew indefinitely. Khalil warned that Hussein’s death would have violent consequences for Iraq. He said the execution made his family “very happy” but would not quell suffering. “You can imagine a mother who has lost seven children cannot avoid shedding tears even in the midst of this happy moment,” he said. The gallows was set up by midnight Baghdad time, Rayis said, and Hussein was led to the scaffold dressed in normal clothes.

house of saddam

Saddam is informed that there is a monetary reward for his family's betrayal, but he insists that they will not be caught. However, the owner of Uday and Qusay's safehouse betrays them to the Americans, and a large number of 101st Airborne Division troops surround the building with tanks and APCs. After refusing to give themselves up, and exchanging fire with the troops, the Americans fire a rocket at their position and all three are killed. Saddam attempts to maintain good relations with the United States as he declares war on Iran while trying to maintain his relationship with his sons Uday (Aris Sahin) and Qusay (played by Raed Khelfi). Meanwhile, he begins an affair with married school teacher Samira Shahbandar.

What began as an act of naked aggression toward Kuwait has been transformed into the culminant act of the drama of his life. Although he had previously shown little concern for the Palestinian people, the shrewdly manipulative Saddam wrapped himself and his rape of Kuwait in the Palestinian flag. The violence and aggression that have marked Saddam Hussein’s career have led him to be characterized--mostly in the West--as a madman.

Maliki legal advisor Mariam Rayis said Hussein’s death warrant was signed by Vice Presidents Tariq Hashimi, a Sunni Arab, and Adel Abdul Mehdi, a Shiite. President Jalal Talabani, a Kurdish death penalty opponent, was out of Baghdad on Friday and delegated his capital authority to Mehdi, Rayis said. With Iraq mired in violence, the former dictator’s demise no longer appeared to signal the beginning of new order. Hussein’s execution seemed to be much less than the historic turning point many people in Iraq and the United States once thought it would be. The intimate world of Saddam Hussein and his closest inner circle is in this gripping four-part drama that charts the rise and fall of one of the most significant political figures in recent history. Deputy President Saddam Hussein and his allies take control of Iraq after intimidating the President into resigning.

house of saddam

He continues trying to rally the Iraqi people against U.S. forces, saying that his fallen sons are heroes of jihad. Saddam's bodyguards build a tunnel where the former dictator can hide, but one of them is captured by U.S. troops when he visits his girlfriend. Saddam decides to move elsewhere, but Ahmed warns him of U.S. patrols. He offers to hide Saddam, but the former president refuses to involve him. Once they return to Baghdad, Hussein and Saddam Kamel are humiliated by Uday and Qusay, who force them to divorce their wives and strip them of their Iraqi uniforms and ranks.

U.S. officials expressed concern that news of the execution’s imminence, which began circulating Thursday, might have given insurgents time to plan attacks. U.S. military officials said they had beefed up security in Baghdad in advance of the execution and to ward off possible retaliatory violence. As U.S. forces seize control of Iraq, Saddam instructs most of his family to flee and prepares to hide himself. A gripping drama series that chronicles the rise and fall of Saddam Hussein, the former president of Iraq.

Defense lawyer Najib Nuaimi said U.S. military officials asked him Friday morning to send someone to pick up Hussein’s personal effects, such as clothing, books -- including a Koran -- and a manuscript Hussein had been writing. The hanging took place in an intelligence facility in northwest Baghdad. The charged silence that settled over the execution chamber was broken by an exchange between Hussein and four guards, who were apparently followers of Muqtada Sadr, the militant Shiite cleric whose father was killed by Hussein. Iraq is crippled by UN sanctions for refusing to comply with weapons inspections. During a holiday celebrating Iraq's "victory" over Iran, the Kamel brothers cross the border to Jordan with their wives, Raghad and Rana Hussein.

A pre-title sequence is set in March 2003, showing Saddam Hussein watching the broadcast of U.S. President George W. Bush's ultimatum to leave Ba'athist Iraq within forty-eight hours. As the bombing of Baghdad commences, Saddam and his family flee the Republican Palace. A man on a motorbike has shot dead a social media influencer known as Om Fahad outside her Baghdad home, Iraqi security officials have said.

Hussein’s lawyers sought a temporary restraining order Friday at an appellate court in Washington, D.C., to force the U.S. military to retain custody of Hussein. The execution “will not end the violence in Iraq,” he said, “but it is an important milestone” in Iraq’s effort to become a self-sustaining democracy and U.S. ally in fighting terrorism. “Fair trials were unimaginable under Saddam Hussein’s tyrannical rule. U.S. military officials handed Hussein over to Iraqi officials around 8 p.m. The government also sorted through execution procedural requirements Friday, including the timing of the execution and the assembly of the gallows. House of Saddam is anchored by a commanding peformance from Igal Naor's, but the miniseries offers shallow insight into the fallen tyrant and the history he helped shape.

In fact, there is no evidence that Saddam is suffering from a psychotic disorder. He is a shrewd and ruthless political calculator, by no means irrational, but dangerous to the extreme, a man consumed with messianic dreams who will go to any lengths to achieve them. Hussein’s execution coincided with the end of the hajj, the seasonal Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca. Most Sunnis began Eid al-Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice, after morning prayers today; most Shiites will begin Sunday morning.

Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) is a pop idol who resolves to reclaim her title as the sexiest pop star in the United States after her last tour was canceled following a nervous breakdown. She begins a complex relationship with Tedros (Abel Tesfaye), a self-help guru and the head of a contemporary cult. The show generally received negative reviews from critics, criticized for being "boring" and poorly executed. Its portrayal of the industry was sleazy, with reviewers disapproving of its script, direction, and performances. Tesfaye's performance was particularly panned as turgid and lacking charisma.

He is actualizing his self-concept as leader of all the Arab peoples, the legitimate heir of Nebuchadnezzar, Saladin and Nasser. While he is psychologically in touch with reality, he is often politically out of touch with reality. He has scant experience outside the Arab world; reportedly he has traveled to the West on only one occasion--a brief trip to Paris in 1976.

The show offers a compelling portrayal of his brutal dictatorship, the inner workings of his regime, and the impact it had on the Iraqi people and the world. Hussein Kamel plans to oust Saddam with Western support, and to reveal state secrets once installed as president. His plans are undermined when Saddam decides to reveal the information himself.

Then on April 7th Pascal Sleiman, an official from the Lebanese Forces (LF), a right-wing Christian party, was abducted near the northern city of Byblos and murdered. The party’s leader was quick to hint at a Hizbullah role (it denied responsibility). A co-production between BBC Television and HBO Films, the series was first broadcast on BBC Two (in the United Kingdom) in four parts between 30 July and 20 August 2008. TO BE lebanese is to see, in every event, the seeds of a new civil war. In March residents of Rmeish, a Christian village in the south, confronted members of Hizbullah, a Shia militia and political party, as they tried to set up a rocket launcher in the town centre.

He is surrounded by sycophants who are cowed by his reputation for brutality and afraid to criticize him. This combination of limited international perspective and the absence of wise counsel has led him to miscalculate on a number of critical occasions. While Saddam is not psychotic, he has a strong paranoid orientation; not without reason, he sees himself as surrounded by enemies and ignores any part he may have had in creating those enemies. The conspiracy theories he spins are not merely for popular consumption in the Arab world but genuinely reflect his paranoid mind-set. He is convinced that the United States, Israel and Iran have been in league for the purpose of eliminating him, and he finds a persuasive chain of evidence for this conclusion. Hussein’s family wants to bury him in his hometown of Tikrit in northern Iraq but are afraid the government will cremate him and scatter the ashes, Nuaimi said.

HBO miniseries House of Saddam attracted approximately 1.1 Million viewers on its debut.

However, they allow them to return to their family home, while Raghad and Rana go to their mother's house. Saddam Hussein then tells General Ali Hassan al-Majid that the honor of the al-Majid clan will be tainted as long as the pair go unpunished. Ali subsequently surrounds the brothers' house with troops, offering the brothers weapons so that they can die fighting.

Halloween is a holiday celebrated each year on the 31st of October. On this day, children dress up as their favorite monsters. People decorate their homes to give them a haunted look. And at night, children go to the neighbors to collect candy. Let’s prepare for Halloween by coloring this page. There is a poem, ‘The Listeners’, by Walter De La Mare.

A suggestion would be to choose two or three pastel colors to alternate between all the lines and squares of the house. This house has stood abandoned for years, with peeling paint, creaky stairs, and squeaky doors. The haunted house should be reinforced with cardboard, and the bottom portion glued to the back of the cardboard circle.

MondayMandala is the ultimate online resource for high-quality, free printables designed for teachers, parents, and children. Enjoy over 10,000 coloring pages, worksheets, and craft printables that will provide hours of endless fun-filled activities. For this terrific craft, the finished haunted houses should be cut out and stapled at the sides and top to paper in a contrasting shade. To color these pages on a digital device, download the image by clicking on it. A full-resolution letter-size file will open up in a new tab.

The drawing on this printable sheet is quite symmetrical, with an enormous moon shining from behind the house, which you could color in silver. This lopsided haunted house looks like it’s barely staying upright. Give it a coat of dark purple paint and glitter spider webs stringing across the roof.

They are warning you, not to come any closer for there is danger ahead you couldn’t ever have dreamt of. Or you could just pick up those colors and make the prison look less scary. No one could tell the difference between the management playing a prank and an actual haunting. Let’s paint this page and don’t forget the eyes in the window.

The windows and doors should be cut out on all four sides. For this spooky craft, bend a piece of cardboard in half to create a floor and a wall, and then glue a roll of cotton balls along the crease. The whole ensemble can then be glued to a piece of poster board for hilarious wall art. To make some adorable desktop decorations, start with some stiff poster board, and roll it into a cylinder so that it can sit vertically.

Plan 7793

Below, AD talks with Shea and interior designer Kirsten Krason from House of Jade about farmhouse design and bringing this style to life. Country floor plans are a broad architectural genre that reflects many other style influences, including farmhouse design, rustic home design, cottage style, barndominium, cabin design, and Southen architectural style. Whether it's a primary residence in a suburban environment or a vacation home hidden in the rural countryside, country style houses are the architectural embodiment of the American Dream. Modern farmhouse style, as the name suggests, brings more contemporary elements into the aesthetic.

Two sinks, a 60″ tub and a 48″x36″ shower are some of the features included in the 12’8″x8’8″ en-suite bathroom. As you reach the common area, the 16’10″x15’7″ living seems bigger than it is. For a modern farmhouse look, it’s good to pair neutral-colored and relatively simple items with a few rustic touches. For example, a modern farmhouse living room could be defined by a large, comfortable white sofa, a simple coffee table made from a natural wood like pine or birch, and exposed wooden beams for additional visual interest.

Maria Videla-Juniel, who designed the primary bathroom of the main house, also devised a welcoming entry to the Gate House. A Thibault wall covering graces the entry, and a Fibreworks runner leads guests up the stairs. Maria Videla-Juniel turned the primary bath into a sumptuous retreat with hues of soft blue and brown. Thibaut wall coverings and fabrics were used for the walls and windows, and the elegant shagreen-covered vanities are accented with gleaming fixtures by P.E. Videla-Juniel and project manager Cheryl Hardy also installed a striking shower clad in herringbone stone tile.

Plan: #142-1204

As you step into the 19’4″x16′ living, you will notice how massive this open floor area is. From the dining room, you have direct access to the side porch through glass sliding doors. Modern farmhouse style, on the other hand, is largely credited to Joanna Gaines and the debut of Fixer Upper in 2013. Though she may not have been the only designer working in this style, the show has been a large factor in bringing the style to the masses. Today, both traditional farmhouse style homes and modern farmhouse style homes pull from these original elements. Traditional farmhouse homes will often embrace the more rustic elements of these homes and, in many ways, it can be seen as a progression of an aesthetic through the decades.

Country house plans reflect the best of rural living, with broad sweeping floor plans and expansive verandas that embrace their setting. A casual, unpretentious lifestyle is at the heart of all our country house plans, reflecting the pioneering and independent spirit of America’s Colonial past. Our country-style home plans incorporate open flowing spaces that are at ease accommodating a casual gathering of friends or an intimate evening for two. Country home floor plan exteriors can range from simple rural Acadian, to farmhouse Gothic, to French Colonial, to Tidewater plantations.

Another farmhouse-style living room by House of Jade features a more neutral color palette with pops of color from plants. An open floor plan does not have to open up the living room, dining room, and kitchen. The Modern Country Style House Plan that is seeing a resurgence now has fuzzy ties to the Modern Farmhouse Movement. These homes evoke simpler times, bring back great memories, feel permanent and generally are structurally straightforward to build.

These homes are smaller in size and carry over many of the aesthetics of Craftsman homes, only on a more stripped-down scale. These houses often feature offset porches, simple front lawns, and a single story that spreads out the rooms to maximize space. A vaulted ceiling is responsible for this effect which maximizes the interior space. They both measure 10’6″x11’3″ so your kids will not have to fight over who gets the bigger room.

The firm creates livable, elegant and artful designs which have grown to include private residences, model units and developer project interiors, executive suites and brand campaigns. Hand-painted floors were the jumping-off point for designer Amy Peltier’s soothing primary bedroom design. “It was so much work, but it turned out beautiful.” The firm wanted the space to feel “light and airy and breezy,” and incorporated fabrics and wall coverings by Thibaut in a soft color palette. Peltier and designer Marina Kelly installed an arch to divide the bedroom from the sitting area, breaking up the large space. In addition to the many classic and historical designs, California also includes many contemporary homes.

However, they might have to wait for each other since they share a single 7’6″x5’0″ bathroom. And though most design professionals would encourage people to follow their own tastes—whether something is in vogue or not—it’s not uncommon to wonder about the realistic lifespan of something as permanent as your home’s design. Though Krasson assures the aesthetic won’t feel dated anytime soon, another way to approach the question is to consider the values that the look emulates. Shea says that her clients who are most eager to embrace this look are drawn to its ability to be equally durable and utilitarian as it is elevated and sophisticated. Rolling furniture is an easy way to transplant vintage or more rustic pieces into any home, no matter when it was constructed.

Generally, it’s no one piece of decor or furniture that is specifically designed in a farmhouse style, but rather an ethos that emerges when multiple pieces are paired together. Just because something is, say, neutral colored doesn’t automatically mean it’s a farmhouse item. A piece like that could just as easily fit into a midcentury aesthetic, for example, or a minimalist one. True to the name, the farmhouse design style has its roots in actual farmhouses or shelters that were built specifically for farmers.

Modern House Design

Clad in white clapboard, black shutters, and a red hand-crimped metal roof, the cottage’s vernacular is familiar to the historic neighboring homes. A tall cabinet on one side of the porch holds an ice machine and coolers ready to wheel out to the back dock. A modern farmhouse seating area makes use of a textured rug and open shelving. A farmhouse kitchen by House of Jade includes charming black and white tiles and a green cabinetry. Fireplaces are often focal points in farmhouse design, and usually make use of brick or stone like this one by House of Jade. A great big sink is "so much more effective," says Martha Stewart of her circa-1925 farmhouse kitchen in Katonah, New York—and we'd have to agree.

Based on the raving reviews of previous guests, I would highly recommend checking this treehouse out if you’re in Western Italy. The bathroom has a compost toilet and gravity-feed water, so you can consider this off-grid abode a step or two above glamping. Do note that you'll need to feel comfortable operating a wood stove for heat in the winter. Exploring the outdoors is easy as the property boasts its own 2.5 miles of trails and mountain vistas. Nearby Cottonwood Creek makes for easy wading and trout fishing, and the Gallatin River and Madison River are also within 30 minutes. Yellowstone is only an hour away and come winter you can take advantage of Big Sky or Bridger Bowl — both about 40 minutes away.

Pros and Cons of Hosting an Airbnb Tiny House

You’ll love the bathroom with its large shower and how surprisingly spacious this property is. Take a short walk to the clubhouse, where you’ll find a pool table, TV, free wifi and an exercise room. The biggest difference is that unlike Airbnb where you can rent a private bedroom in a shared apartment, on VRBO you’ll have the entire place to yourself, which I love. We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. These spaces promise to be hopping on Saturday, May 4, for the brewery’s Big Bash celebration, during which multiple new beers will be available on draft, including OG Dub IPA, named in honor of Wong, and The Long Game tropical lager.

Highland Brewing was founded in 1994 by retired engineer and entrepreneur Oscar Wong, establishing it as the pioneer of Asheville, NC’s now booming craft beer industry. Proudly regional, Highland’s beers are distributed in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, and Georgia. Highland is committed to quality and sustainability, boasting the sixth largest solar array in an American craft brewery. Today, the company is led by Wong’s daughter, Leah Wong Ashburn, and serves as the largest independent, family-owned, and operated brewery native to the Southeast.

Aside from their original scenic location, Highland is also making a move towards being among the downtown Asheville breweries, opening a second location at S&W Cafeteria. We have a 3-BBL Pilot Brewhouse where we test new brews that are only available on draft at our brewery Taproom and Downtown Taproom. The comments section is here to provide a platform for civil dialogue on the issues we face together as a local community. Xpress is committed to offering this platform for all voices, but when the tone of the discussion gets nasty or strays off topic, we believe many people choose not to participate.

Complimentary guided walking tours of the facilities are available every day of the week. They last around 45 minutes, and include a beer tasting to celebrate the occasion. Amongst the many Asheville brewery tours we’ve taken, the Highland Brewery tour ranks right up there with the best.

Highland Brewing Downtown Taproom

She officially joined Highland in 2011 and became company president in 2015. Under her leadership, the brewery underwent a brand refresh in 2018, trading bagpipe-and-beer-toting Scotsman “Scott” for a crisp, clean, compasslike logo. Wong is quick to rattle off facts and figures from those early years but otherwise notes he isn’t much interested in revisiting the brewery’s past.

They first lived in Brevard, where Jonathon taught writing at Blue Ridge Community College and extensively explored the Blue Ridge Parkway and Pisgah National Forest. For the last several years they have lived just off the BRP near Elkin, Southwest Virginia, and the NC High Country. The couple also volunteers with the Surry Old Time Fiddlers Convention, the Elkin Valley Trail Association, and Reeves Downtown School of Music. The S&W Cafeteria is an art deco-style architectural space that’s part of a move to help revitalize Asheville’s downtown (which Highland helped to do back in the 1990s). In addition to their public offerings, Highland Brewery Asheville also has two venues for private events.

For more information, visit Follow Highland on Twitter at @HighlandBrews and Instagram at @HighlandBrewing. Highland Brewing Company was founded in 1994 by retired engineer and entrepreneur Oscar Wong. As the first craft brewery to open in Asheville, NC since Prohibition, Highland became known as the pioneer of the city’s now-booming craft beer industry. Highland's commitment to quality and sustainability boasts the sixth largest solar array in an American craft brewery.

As a perennial feature on Asheville beer tours and one of the city’s best breweries, Highland Brewing Co doesn’t really need to do much more to get noticed. And yet they do, with their many community-minded and environmentally aware initiatives. In 2020, Highland will also be opening a second site in downtown Asheville, at the S&W Cafeteria.

At the time of opening, Highland Brewing Company was Asheville’s first legal brewery since Prohibition. You’ll want to make plans to party with us and raise a glass to Asheville’s first brewery, founded in 1994. Parking is limited and will be $10 per vehicle upon arrival (we recommend ride share!).Want to party in style with a parking pass, exclusive VIP-only venues, private bar areas, and serious swag? Having maxed out brewing capacity at its downtown basement, Highland moved to East Asheville in 2006, taking over the former home of Blue Ridge Motion Picture Studios.

In addition to two bars, street-side seating, and a mezzanine, this location will also offer a food hall, with four different stalls to choose from. For smaller crowds of 100 people or less, they’ll be opening The Barrel Room in spring of 2020. It’s described as “posh without being stuffy, casual without being boring.” The room has a catering kitchen and a private bar in a setting that puts guests right in the middle of the company’s aging barrels. Their official Event Center features a main floor, a mezzanine, and a rooftop beer garden. It can accommodate up to 300 people for a seated dinner, and includes a stage with full audio and visual technology capabilities.

Asheville’s craft beer footprint has grown exponentially since Highland came onto the scene in the mid 1990s. When Wong began his craft beer journey, he was largely brewing alone. Almost 30 years later, around 40 other Asheville breweries have joined the party. In 2006, Highland moved operations to its current East Asheville location, where they’ve since expanded their footprint to include a multifaceted brewing campus and all-around entertainment destination. Now in addition to grabbing a pint or flight in the taproom, you can also have a brew at The Meadow, where there’s a second bar, plus a stage for live music, shady table seating, frequent food trucks, and a lush lawn.

After spending years owning and running a Charlotte-based engineering firm that designed nuclear waste facilities, Wong bought a house in the sleepy mountain town of Asheville and was ready to settle into a slower-paced life. Instead, his home brewing hobby snowballed, and next thing he knew, he was opening a brewery. That mix of consistency and innovation has proved key to Highland’s sustained operations in an ever-changing industry. One notable exception is the popular Cold Mountain Winter Ale, which intentionally evolves slightly from year to year with different ingredients. Highland is now the largest family-owned brewery in the Southeast, and currently run by Oscar’s daughter, CEO Leah Wong Ashburn. Visiting Highland should be a big draw for anyone doing Asheville tours.
